From Dorm Room to Board Room – An Entrepreneur Story

What’s it Like Starting Your Own Company?

Chris Wentz is the CEO and Co-founder of Everykey.  Everykey is a Bluetooth device that replaces that replaces your keys and passwords.  When Everykey is close to your phone, laptop, tablet or another device that needs a passcode, it unlocks that device automatically.  Then when you walk away, Everykey re-locks your devices so they are safe and secure while you are out of range. Everykey can also automatically log you into your online accounts, like your email and social media.  If you happen to lose it, you can even freeze it remotely from an app, so no one else can use it.

Everykey started as an idea in an entrepreneurship class in 2012 at Case Western Reserve University.  Chris says his professor was so impressed by the idea he wanted to invest his own money to get the company off the ground.

“That’s when we finally saw, ‘holy cow’ this could be a lot more than just a class project. This could be a real business someday.”

Day-in-the-life of an entrepreneur

Chris says when you are an entrepreneur there is no such thing as a typical day.  On any given day, Chris says he’s working on whatever the current need is for the company.  One day it could be getting ready to make a manufacturing run or another day it could be he’s helping develop software.

Advice for entrepreneurs

Chris says his biggest piece of advice for somebody who is wanting to start their own company is to never give up.

“There are probably about 10 to 20 times I can point to that I thought Everykey was going to go out of business, where things just seemed very bleak. But we never gave up and that brought us to where we are today.”

Chris says entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster, with many ups and downs.  He explains that when things are going right, you feel like you are on top of the world.  But that is also matched with some very low, lows.  But Chris says if you just keep going, you go leaps and bounds for your company.

How an entrepreneurship class helped

Chris wouldn’t be where he is today with Everykey without help from grants and resources available at Case Western Reserve University.  He shares how the Burton D. Morgan Foundation and LaunchNet helped Everykey.
