Did you know you can get a job in social media?  You can actually get paid to be on social media, like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all day.

Monina Wagner is the Community Manager for Content Marketing Institute (CMI), the leading global content marketing education and training organization based in Cleveland, Ohio.  She’s in charge of all the strategy and execution for CMI’s social media channels. What does that mean?  Monina has a job working on Facebook and Twitter all day.

A day-in-the-life of a Social Media Manager

All of CMI’s employees work from home, so Monina’s typical day begins with her just grabbing a cup of coffee and sitting down on her own couch to work.  She starts by checking Twitter to see what has happened overnight.  She’s checking if there’s any big news in the marketing world that she needs to be aware of.  She’s looking at CMI’s Twitter feed to see if anyone has mentioned @CMIContent and are looking to engage with the company. She’s doing the same with Facebook and Instagram. Monina wants to make sure that those people are taken care of, that she is answering their questions or concerns, and reweeting and engaging with them.

What’s the best part of working in social media?

While it is a fun job, Monina says there’s a misconception that she’s just “playing on Facebook” all day.  There’s much more to a job in social media.  She has to dig into analytics and make sure CMI is giving their audience the content and engagement they are looking for.  She has to work on the social media strategy for the company, which includes a lot of planning, like creating an editorial calendar for all the posts she puts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

What skills do you need for a career in social media?

Additionally, Monina’s social media job with CMI is a little unique because CMI puts on a conference every year called Content Marketing World.  Monina is in charge of all social media for the four-day event.  With almost 4,000 attendees, she has to go through roughly 10,000 Tweets and 500 Instagram posts a day.  On top of  that, she does Facebook Live, as well as takes and shares photos and quotes from speakers and the event. It’s a very intense week because it’s a live event and she’s working on the fly.

How do you get a job in social media?

Monina says it’s about more than just knowing how to use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. To become a social media manager, she says the best skill to have is to be a good writer.  When you only have 140 characters to get a message across to your audience, Monina says it’s important to be skilled at writing and crafting an effective message. If you aren’t good at getting that message out, you lose your audience and ultimately that’s bad for business.  Besides having the writing skills, Monina says you also need to be able and willing to communicate and engage with others.

“I would recommend this job because it’s a lot of fun. I really love doing it and honestly the people who would do well in a position like this, are those who are friendly.  You just need to be engaging.  If you’re not comfortable talking to people, then it’s hard to keep that connection going online.”
