If spending the day in a laboratory running tests and experiments sounds like an interesting job, then a career as a biomedical engineer could be for you.
Meet Nick DeFranco. He’s an application scientist at Lubrizol LifeSciences near Cleveland, Ohio. Their clients are some of the biggest medical and pharmaceutical companies in the world. They supply medical polymers and pharmaceutical excipients, as well as formulate drugs and manufacture custom medical devices and components.
Nick gets to work with polymers, creating medical devices and drugs. Then, using all kinds of state of the art equipment and machines, he tests them to make sure they work properly and are safe. Nick loves that his job is to help improve patients’ lives by making medical products and drugs work better.
Nick has an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He also has a master of engineering and management degree as well. Nick was always interested in the medical field. But he was also interested in science and technology. He says biomedical engineering lets him use his love of science and technology and apply it to the medical field to help people.
Advice on Finding a Career
When trying to decide what career you’re interested in, Nick suggests you get out of your comfort zone. He’s learned the only way to truly find what you are passionate about, is to expose yourself to new experiences. So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and be open to opportunities.
Nick says his internships at Lubrizol really helped give him a great perspective on what he’s doing today.
